Foodways at S-WH

Food in colonial times was much different compared to what we eat today. Religious beliefs, traditions, geography, growing season, harvest, and cooking methods all played a role in what was available and how much was eaten with each region developing their own unique dietary habits. "Living history" expert Dennis Picard will share anecdotes about New England colonial life while demonstrating how to start a fire and cooking either in the hearth or on an open campfire.

Maple Day

March 7, 2026 / 12-4 PM / FREE

Historic interpreter Dennis Picard will tap a maple tree and evaporate sap in kettles over a wood fire, sharing techniques, seasonal context, and stories that bring New England sugaring to life. Demonstrations run continuously throughout the afternoon.
